Democracy Defenders Fund sues bad actors — including the government itself — on behalf of the American people and individuals harmed by policies that undermine democracy and violate the Constitution. Our impact includes:
- Barbara v. Trump protected the birthright citizenship of approximately 250,000 babies. We litigated on day one, and took the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
- We won eight injunctions in cases challenging mass firings, stopped the shutdown of AmeriCorps, the Voice of America, and the TSA union, and we halted the illegal firing of federal workers during the government shutdown, protecting hundreds of thousands of civil servants from unlawful terminations.
- With co-counsel, we fight back against illegal terminations, such as Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.
- We helped remove unlawfully appointed U.S. attorneys, including Alina Habba, President Trump’s personal attorney and former acting U.S. Attorney for District of New Jersey. We developed a legal theory that judges cited when they halted the politically motivated prosecutions of New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey.
