Following is a statement by Susan Corke, executive director, and Norman Eisen, executive chair at Democracy Defenders Fund, regarding the Department of Justice’s “criminal” investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

“Once again, the Trump-Bondi DOJ is abusing its power to exact revenge and bend our institutions to Trump’s will. When elected officials, appointees or business leaders refuse to do Trump’s bidding, his instinct is to ignore constitutional limits and retaliate with threats, political pressure or, most shocking, criminal investigations. Chairman Powell is right to stand up to this abuse of power. The independence of the Federal Reserve isn’t some abstract principle: it protects every American family from those who would gamble with the economy for political gain. Upholding its independence protects economic stability and the checks and balances that sustain our democracy.”
